Good afternoon Mountain View Families,

Over the weekend, the TK-8 educational community and many families became aware of a lawsuit involving the i-Ready program through news reports. As many of you know, our MVSD schools, along with millions across the U.S., use i-Ready as a reading and math skills assessment tool for our students. Since hearing about the lawsuit, Mountain View has carefully reviewed the concerns brought up in the suit, state and federal sources, as well as information from i-Ready regarding the data privacy and sharing allegations.

To re-evaluate i-Ready’s suitability, we revisited the information from the What Works Clearinghouse from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. This source identifies i-Ready as both research-based and evidence-based, meeting the requirements outlined under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Additionally, the California Department of Education also recognizes i-Ready as:

  • Aligned with the State Standards
  • Meeting requirements for validity and reliability
  • Appropriate for its intended use

At the state level, the i-Ready program is included among the diagnostic assessments for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics that meet the requirements of Education Code Section 60644.

At this time, the allegations of data sharing outlined in the lawsuit remain unproven, and the legal process will determine whether further action is warranted. Within Mountain View School District, our existing safeguards for secure student logins through MVSD accounts provide additional layers of protection that help mitigate potential risks.

As this situation continues to evolve, we will actively monitor developments related to i-Ready, as well as similar lawsuits involving other educational platforms, including IXL, Renaissance Learning (Accelerated Reader), Google, PowerSchool, Instructure, and Seesaw.

We remain committed to ensuring the safety, privacy, and quality of the instructional tools we use with our students. We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available. Attached is additional information on Student Data Privacy for i-Ready for your reference that can also be found online on the curriculumassociates.com/litigation webpage. If you have any questions regarding this and other educational tools, please contact your school site.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Raymond A. Andry, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Mountain View School District
